This year’s 26th edition of the International Francophonie Day was celebrated on 20th March 2021 and the week of Francophonie was on the 13 to the 21 March 2021.
This moment provided an opportunity for French speakers and lovers of the language around the world to celebrate the French language in all its diversity. As is the norm we were not left out in these celebrations. We partnered with the Ministry of Basic Education in a bid to enhance the student’s knowledge of the French language.
Our celebrations started on Monday 15th March with a French book sales and a daily screening of a Francophonie video at Alliance. The short clip highlighted different French speakers giving a presentation of their own countries, their favorite national cuisine and expressions. This information is vital as it gives the listeners an opportunity to appreciate and learn the rich cultural diversities around the world. On Tuesday 16th March, the Alliance Française in partnership with Ministry of Basic Education run a Francophonie quiz in order to test the French students. This year only one school Tlokweng CJSS was nominated to take part in the Week of Francophonie in the form of a quiz due to the current health situation.
The fifteen (15) French students ranged from form 2 to form 3. Wednesday 17 March saw the official opening of the Francophonie Week by the French Ambassador H.E Madame Laurence Beau. Followed by a cocktail and the French film Casque d’or to close the evening. Movie projections are another way of showcasing different cultures, therefore on Thursday we projected La Grande Illusion, a French film produced by Jean Rénoir.
Out of the fourteen French students that took part in the Francophonie quiz, the top best 5 students were identified and awarded with prizes accordingly. The same as those who obtained position 6 – 14. Below are the winners and their classes.
